About Us

The term ‘KHAT KHAT’ refers to the sound created while weaving handloom. This sound is produced while weavers weave your gorgeous sarees. You will be able to smell love and a bundle of emotions when you drape yourself in a KHAT KHAT handloom saree. KHAT KHAT handloom weaves are made from completely organic fabrics which are handwoven by indigenous artisans of India. The weavers carry generations of expertise and legacy of hand weave techniques. Every single saree has been created carefully and patiently.

Your sarees are created with love and care. Artisans at KHAT KHAT weave your sarees with lots of emotions and patience. They sit on the loom for hours, continuously moving their hands and feet to weave your beautiful saree. KHAT KHAT is one of its kind because it talks of inspiration, uniqueness, details, handcraft and purely handmade with love and laughter.

Khat Khat Memories

Asti Bhagat is the creator and owner of Khat Khat handloom. As Asti quotes, “I remember those beautiful summer days when I used to rub my face with the pallu of my mom’s cotton saree just to feel the softness and comfort.” I remember choosing the sarees she would wear for various occasions. I used to be her personal designer and would always wait and watch her drape the saree neatly and elegantly. She would call me to crease out her pleats. I have vivid memories of her applying sindoor on her forehead while looking at herself in the mirror. I would just admire her beauty and grace. I also remember her kissing my forehead.

“Asti’s love for sarees definitely comes from her mom.”

How was Khat Khat born?

Asti was born and brought up in Asansol, a small city in West Bengal, a state known for its art, culture, and heritage. Her desire to explore life and her creative soul took her to Bangalore. She completed her graduation from Mount Carmel College, Bangalore, with a B.Sc in fashion and textiles. She topped her graduation with the title of the most innovative and best avant-garde designer.

After graduation, Asti’s parents wanted her to get married, but her inner voice asked her to explore more of life. She went against everyone for her passion. She got her Master’s from Pearl Academy. She did an MA in fashion and textiles. She worked for two and a half years at Centex Ludhiana as a creative designer.

She used to spend hours standing in front of the loom, absorbing the process and listening to the weaver’s stories. She started feeling emotionally connected to the process and the weavers. She always used to come up with new concepts, so her mentors used to call her the “Tassel Queen.” Her designs started getting selected by GAP, Zara, Hugo Boss, etc.
Asti’s inner voice told her, “Kuch toh baat hai mujhme.” For more clarity, she started meditating every day. After shifting to Delhi, she worked for two and a half years as a concept designer.

Every weekend she used to paint to express her love for her mom. She loved travelling and used to attend art exhibitions. She used to paint her old denim t-shirts and give them a new Banjara look.

In September 2020, she left her job and started working for KHAT KHAT Handloom.  She started spending time with weavers. The weavers used to say that they were not paid on time or were paid less. The weavers and a few artisans started leaving their jobs because of this reason and moved towards driving autos. So she put all her savings into her brand without giving it a second thought to helping these weavers. Asti is grateful to all her mentors, college teachers, weavers, artisans, and Didi’s who work for KHAT KHAT Handloom. KHAT KHAT handloom could not have been possible without their contribution.
